India’s Arms Sales to Israel Risk Complicity in Gaza Genocide, Amnesty Says
India’s deepening ties with Israel have been marked by a sinister reality beneath the surface. A report by Amnesty International sheds light on the substantial risk that Indian arms sales pose to the ongoing genocide against Palestinians in Gaza.
The scale of India’s involvement is staggering. According to Amnesty’s investigation, Indian companies supplied at least 390,516 small arms parts for military-grade weapons, 564,970 parts of explosive ordnance – such as drone warheads and artillery shell casings – and 298 components of military vehicles to Israeli military suppliers since October 2023.
This is not a new development. Historically, India and Israel have had close ties in defense matters, with India being Israel’s largest defense purchaser for years. However, this relationship has taken on a more sinister tone with each passing conflict in Gaza, raising questions about the true nature of India’s involvement – is it merely a business partnership or does it involve complicity in war crimes?
The International Court of Justice (ICJ) issued provisional measures in 2024 ordering Israel to take action to prevent genocide in Gaza. Yet India continues to supply arms to the Israeli military, despite its claim to be a champion of human rights. The optics are damaging given Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s frequent declarations of friendship with Israeli Premier Benjamin Netanyahu.
India is now implicated in Israel’s ongoing genocide against Palestinians, whether directly or indirectly through its arms sales. This has serious consequences for India’s relationships with the international community and its own citizens. As Amnesty International’s secretary-general Agnes Callamard puts it, “India manufactures and supplies arms transferred to Israel through its ownership and control over key supplier companies.”
The story of India-Israel ties dates back to the 1990s, when both countries began exploring defense cooperation. Since then, the relationship has grown exponentially, with India becoming one of Israel’s largest defense buyers. However, this partnership has been marked by controversy, particularly in light of Israel’s military actions against Palestinians.
Several countries have begun reevaluating their relationships with Israel, citing concerns about human rights and the impact of Israeli actions on global stability. It seems unlikely that New Delhi will take decisive action to distance itself from Israel’s military actions in Gaza, given its current stance.
The Amnesty report serves as a stark reminder of the need for greater scrutiny and accountability in international relations. As countries continue to engage with each other in defense partnerships, they must also acknowledge their responsibility to uphold human rights and prevent war crimes. The question is: will India’s leadership take this step or continue to prioritize its business interests above all else?
